The first ‘Octoberfest’ was celebrated between the 12th and the 17th of October 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Luis I of Bavaria to Princess Teresa de Sajonia-Altenburgo. That celebration was in the form of a horse race. Since that date, ‘Octoberfest’ has been celebrated in ‘Theresienwiese’ (known simply as ‘wiesn’), in an open country close to Múnich. Today, the modern ‘Octoberfest’ has a young tradition in comparison to other popular festivals and celebrations (Schützenvereine).
After the success of the first celebration, the festival continued, and began to take over the entire month of September, proving to be a great success. ‘Octoberfest’ normally finishes during the first few days of October.
The centenary of ‘Octoberfest, was celebrated in 1910 where 12,000 litres of beer were served, the marquee in Bräurosl had capacity for 12,000 guests.
Nowadays the beer-tent at Hofbräu-Festhalle can hold 10,000 guests and is the largest in Theresienwiese.
In Argentina, the local version of ‘Octoberfest’ began in Villa General Belgrano, and is known as the ‘National Beer Festival’
