6 Activities to Enjoy at Amauta while learning Spanish

As a student at Amauta, your experience goes beyond the classroom. Apart from the Spanish lessons, the school organizes a variety of fun and engaging free activities for the students throughout the week, giving you the chance to explore Peruvian culture while connecting with fellow students.
Three main activities are offered each week, usually on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. In addition, more casual events, like the Welcome Dinner on Mondays, help ease you into the community and make new friends from the start.
Here are five popular activities you might get to enjoy during your time as a Spanish student at Amauta in Cusco.
Salsa Class
Friday night is salsa night! A dance teacher comes to the school and shows us some basic steps which we practice with great music. It’s a really fun way to wrap up the week. Whether you’ve danced before or not, you’ll have a great time.
Painting Toritos de Pucará
One of the best Thursday activities is painting Toritos! Toritos are bull-shaped ceramic pieces originally from the town of Pucará, at the north of Puno. They are hung above houses’ entrances as symbols of protection and prosperity. Students get to decorate their own torito however they like: colorful, classic, you name it. The best part is you get to keep it and bring a little piece of Peru home with you.

San Blas Tour
A great Tuesday activity is the San Blas tour, exploring the neighborhood where Amauta is located. San Blas is full of charm: every street has its own artistic vibe, with colorful doors and local artisans. There are also various stunning viewpoints overlooking the city. These can be found on the way to some important landmarks, like the Mesa Redonda and the Colonial Aqueduct.

Music Class
Another favorite is the music class! You get to learn to play the Siku, a traditional Andean panpipe, and appreciate the rich culture behind it. No music experience is needed, the teacher walks everyone through it step by step, making it easy and fun.
During the class, you’ll be playing along with the group, and if you’d like to keep practicing, you can even buy your own panpipe to take home.

Welcome Dinner
The Welcome Dinner is more of a gathering than an activity, but it definitely earns its place on the list. Every Monday, students are invited to join a group dinner at a local restaurant, usually in ‘our’ San Blas neighborhood. It’s a great chance for both new and returning students to meet, chat, and enjoy some good food together. You’ll get to know your classmates, hear some fun stories, and discover one of Cusco’s great dining spots. It’s the perfect way to kick off your week and start building connections that make your time here even better.

ChocoMuseo
Another great Tuesday activity is going to the ChocoMuseo! It’s a fun place to explore and discover the many cacao-based products made in the Cusco region. The staff gives a free explanation of how chocolate is made, showing the different types and the ingredients behind them. If you really like chocolate, you can book a Bean-to-Bar workshop during which you learn to make your own chocolate from scratch.
