The host families live in different areas of Buenos Aires. Some are located in the center, 10 – 15 minutes walking distance from the school, while others live in the quieter, more affluent areas of Buenos Aires, outside the tourist district, such as Recoleta, Palermo, Belgrano and others. From these places you can easily reach the school by taxi or public bus or metro (subte) within 30-45 minutes. Transport in Buenos Aires is quite cheap – public transport costs around US$0.40 (subject to change).
Yes, you will get the details of your Argentine host family in advance, normally a few weeks before arrival. Only in exceptional cases it might happen that we do need to change your host family when the date comes closer. This only happens when there is an emergency, such as: a family member is ill and the host family cannot give you the attention you need, or the host family receives an unexpected family visit, or, a former student is ill and needs to extend his or her stay at the host family. Of course we always try to avoid this and if it does happen, you will be advised.
All home stays are based on half board and include breakfast and dinner during weekdays. In the weekends, only breakfast is included. You are free to go out for meals whenever you wish. However, meal times are the greatest opportunities you will have to spend with your family and where you can practice your Spanish, so we recommend that you eat with your family as frequently as possible.
Yes, you can book a double room with a host family. However, prices are always per person and are the same whether you have your own room or a shared room. Also, your request – as all other special requests – is subject to availability.
You can book extra nights with your host family, at the beginning or at the end of your stay with your course councilor at AMAUTA or at the (international) language agency representing AMAUTA is also possible for you to stay in a hotel for your first night, or in the school residence. If you want additional days after finishing your course, please inform us as soon as possible to ensure that there is space before the family receives new students.
Our host families have experience with the preparation of vegetarian meals, so this is not an issue. Also, if you have other dietary restrictions or allergies, just let us know in advance. However, traditional Argentine cuisine is based on a lot of meat.
AMAUTA guest families are carefully chosen and monitored through regular inspections and student feedback. Members of the family enjoy having foreign students around and introducing them to Argentine life. Some speak some English but not all of them. Furthermore, we are in constant contact with the guest mothers.
If you have chosen to stay with a host family but for some reason you are very disappointed and not happy during the first days, we will try to accommodate your request of changing your accommodation and move you to either another host family or to our student accommodation. However, all changes are subject to availability and in some cases a change fee might apply.
When you book several weeks in Argentina, you can always change one or more weeks to one of the other locations. You can enter all your requests on your booking form when enrolling for your Spanish classes with AMAUTA. Our standard Spanish & Volunteer program of 8 weeks, includes four weeks with a host family and four weeks in the AMAUTA Student Accommodation in Buenos Aires.
You do not have to take a gift but it is a nice idea to bring something typical from your country. Or you could take some cookies or a cake when you arrive. Or, you might like to offer a gift when you leave the family instead.
