Born in Madrid (Spain) in 1950. In the 70 degree in History from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and works as a literary critic. At this time interested in the film and wrote his first scripts, which were later adapted to film.

In 2006 he began shooting the film Alatriste, based on the novel by Arturo Perez-Reverte, which was spectacular with a cast led by Viggo Mortensen. This film was also nominated for several Goya Awads.
His last film to date is Just Walking, premiered in November 2008, which has earned a new Goya nomination for Best Director. He is president of the Association of Audiovisual Authors Literary (ALMA).
